Embrace a Fresh Start: Letting Go and Growing in the New Year

breaking chains for a fresh start in 1025

As we step into 2025, I can’t help but marvel at how quickly time flies. Remember when we thought 1999 was a million miles away? Now here we are, a quarter of the way through the 21st century. But you know what I love about a new year? If we allow it, we get a fresh start – a chance to start from scratch.

The Apostle Paul gives us a powerful perspective on this in Philippians 3:13-14: “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Letting Go of the Past

Paul’s words remind us that to move forward, we must first let go of what’s behind us. This doesn’t mean we erase our memories or pretend the past didn’t happen. Instead, it means we break the power of the past by living for the future in Christ.

Think about Joseph in the Old Testament. When he finally revealed himself to his brothers who had sold him into slavery years before, he didn’t hold a grudge. Instead, he saw his past from God’s perspective. In Genesis 45:5, he told them, “Now do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.”

Joseph knew God had a plan for his life, and by looking ahead, he broke the power of his painful past. We can experience the same fresh start.

Dealing with Unresolved Issues

As we enter this new year, it’s crucial to address any unresolved issues in our lives. These are like elephants in the room – everyone knows they’re there, but no one wants to talk about them. Left unaddressed, they smolder beneath the surface, ready to flare up at any moment.

In marriages, friendships, and even within our church family, we need to commit to resolving conflicts and offering forgiveness. Ephesians 4:31-32 instructs us, “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

Pressing Toward the Goal

With the past behind us and unresolved issues addressed, we’re ready to press forward. Paul uses the phrase “I press on” in Philippians 3:12. This reminds me of a full-court press in basketball – an all-out effort where every player gives 100%.

As we move into 2025, let’s commit to a spiritual full-court press. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize, not looking back but focusing on the fresh start God has ahead for us. Remember, the greatest victories and most glorious miracles are not behind you – they’re ahead of you!

Putting It Into Practice

1. Identify and release: What “graveclothes” from your past are holding you back? Identify them and ask God to help you let them go.

2. Resolve and reconcile: Are there any unresolved issues in your relationships? Take steps to address them, even if it means having difficult conversations.

3. Set God-centered goals: Pray about what God wants to accomplish in and through you this year. Write down specific goals that align with His will for your life.

4. Commit to growth: Determine to grow spiritually this year. This might involve more consistent Bible study, joining a small group, or finding a mentor.

5. Serve others: Look for ways to use your gifts to serve in your church and community. Remember, as we grow individually, the church grows collectively.

As we embark on this new year, let’s embrace the clean slate God offers us. Let’s let go of the past, resolve our conflicts, and press on toward the goal God has set before us. Together, with God’s help, we can make 2025 a year of unprecedented growth and impact for His kingdom.
