Why Is the Resurrection of Jesus So Important?

The grave clothes folded in the tomb after the resurrection.

Let me ask you a question that carries eternal weight: What if the Resurrection of Jesus never happened?

That’s exactly the scenario the Apostle Paul challenges in 1 Corinthians 15. He says if Christ hasn’t been raised, then our preaching is pointless, our faith is empty, and we are still stuck in our sins. That’s a bleak picture. If Easter is just about chocolate bunnies and pastel-colored eggs, then we’re missing the point by a mile.

But here’s the good news, and it’s why we gather every Sunday, not just on Easter: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! And that one truth changes everything.

1. Jesus’ Resurrection Proves He Is the Son of God

There are a lot of people today who like Jesus—they just don’t believe He’s divine. They’ll say He was a good teacher, a wise prophet, a man of love and compassion. But let’s be honest: A good teacher doesn’t claim He can raise Himself from the dead unless He’s actually God in the flesh.

Jesus said in John 10:18 that He had the authority to lay down His life and the power to take it back up again. If you ever doubt His deity, just stop by the tomb on the morning of the third day. It’s empty.

God is not the God of the dead—He’s the God of the living. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—they’re not just characters in an ancient story. Jesus said, “I am the God of Abraham,” not “I was.” That means they’re alive, and so is He.

2. The Resurrection Fulfills Every Word of Scripture

From the Old Testament to the teachings of Christ, the resurrection is not an afterthought—it’s the fulfillment of prophecy. Psalm 16:10 says, “You will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.” Jesus Himself said, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it in three days.” They thought He was talking about a building. He was talking about His body.

If He didn’t rise, those promises would’ve been lies. And let me tell you, faith in a lie will always bring consequences. But faith in the truth? That’s never misplaced.

You can believe the Word of God. You can build your life on it. Because the resurrection of Jesus is proof that God keeps His promises.

3. It Guarantees Our Resurrection

This life is not all there is. Aren’t you glad? Because if this is it—if the cemetery is the finale—then we are, as Paul said, of all people the most pitiful.

But Jesus is the firstfruits of the resurrection. Because He lives, we too shall live. That grave? It’s not your final address. It’s just a temporary stop.

Job said it best in the middle of his suffering: “I know that my Redeemer lives.” I love that. Not “I hope,” not “I think”—but “I know.”

Because of the resurrection of Jesus, we have the promise of a grand reunion. I’ll see my mom again. I’ll see my dad again. We’ll gather with the family of God and celebrate—not in a cold graveyard, but at a heavenly banquet table. And let me tell you, any God who starts eternity with a feast is my kind of God.

4. The Resurrection of Jesus Confirms Future Judgment

This might not be your favorite point, but it’s true nonetheless. Paul stood before a group of intellectuals and party animals (what a crowd!) and said that God has appointed a day to judge the world through the one He raised from the dead—Jesus Christ.

The resurrection isn’t just about grace—it’s about accountability. One day, we’ll all stand before the risen Lord and give an account. Not because He’s angry, but because He’s just. And if He came out of that grave, you better believe He’s coming back again.

5. It Gives Us Power to Live Today

This one’s personal. You might think, “I want to follow Jesus, but I’m not good enough. I’ll never measure up.” Newsflash: none of us can.

But Romans 8:11 tells us that the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in us. That means you’re not walking through life alone. That resurrection power that rolled the stone away can help you overcome sin, face fear, and live in freedom.

You don’t clean yourself up before you come to Jesus. You just say and give Him the deed to your heart, and He moves in with resurrection power to clean house from the inside out.

I know it’s true because I’ve lived it. As a kid, I had a speech impediment. Couldn’t talk. Therapy after therapy. And then, one night, at a simple altar, I heard God whisper that He wanted to use me. To preach. I laughed, and I cried. I thought He was joking.

But from the moment I stood up from that altar, something changed. Because the resurrection of Jesus isn’t just about what happened to Him—it’s about what happens in us when we say yes.

So why is the Resurrection of Jesus so important?

Because it proves He’s God, validates the Scriptures, promises our future, confirms justice, and gives us power for living. It’s not just a historical event—it’s the hinge on which our faith swings.

And it demands a response.

You can laugh it off like some did. You can delay and say, “Maybe later.” Or you can believe. You can say yes.

And when you do, you won’t just survive life—you’ll come alive.

Jesus rose to walk out of the tomb and walk into your life. Will you let Him?
