I grew up singing and worshiping in the church. In fact, there are stories about me singing and worshiping Jesus in the aisles of the grocery store.
As a teen growing up in an Assembly of God church, I was familiar with the spiritual act of worship both corporately and personally. However, when I went to Messiah College (now University), a school founded in the Brethren in Christ tradition, I was exposed to a wide variety of worship traditions, from more traditional, liturgical worship to charismatic, spirit-led free worship.
I saw churches where the people didn’t outwardly express their response in worship but acted and lived out their love for the Lord in a tangible way. I also saw church-goers who demonstrated their love for the Lord through worship with every part of themselves, experiencing such abandon in worship.
It was awe-inspiring. Through all these experiences, I came to understand that my worship was a unique combination of the things I had seen and heard.
My heart is that worshipers would come and offer their whole selves: body, soul, and mind, to the Lord without concern for those around them, but for the AUDIENCE OF ONE. As it says in Jeremiah 20:9, “his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.”
